Kibakayas lyrical compositions draw inspiration from a wide range of musical figures, from Trondheim Jazz Orchestra to Ben Wendel and Lianne La Havas. The music is melodic, vibrant and intimate, often rooted in swaying bass motifs. Since its inception in 2019, the sextet has developed a distinct sound and exciting interplay. The vocals are exploratory, and stylistically stretch both toward Nordic Jazz and american soul aesthetics. The listener is welcomed into a universe where the desire is to move, both the body in rhythm and what stirs within us.
biography
In this atmosphere we find the sound of the nordic jazz scene and the modern american jazz expression.
The sextet made their debut with the album “Roots” released by Jazzland Recordings in 2023, and has been seen on stages such as Oslo Jazz Festival, Bodø Jazz Open, Trondheim Jazz Festival and Loch (Wuppertal, DE). About the debut album Torkjell Hovland writes the following in Jazznytt. “But above all “Roots” is terribly well arranged! And this solid craftmanship has made this music rooted in jazz traditions that can reach far out to new ears. In the period 2023-2024 a new work by Kibakaya is being developed titled “In Pursuit”. The theme of the music being the experiences had while pursuing freedom. Images of nature, movement, longing, joy and the restlessness associated with the increasing pulse of todays society find their place surrounded by strong melodies.
